About the ACCUPLACER exam

What is ACCUPLACER?

ACCUPLACER is a set of placement tests from College Board. Colleges and some high schools use the scores, often along with your high school record, to decide which reading, writing and math courses you are ready for.

How are the tests structured?

Each test is multiple choice and computer-adaptive, so each question is chosen based on how you answered the ones before. Reading, Arithmetic, QAS and Advanced Algebra and Functions have 20 questions each, and Writing has 25. In most cases there is no time limit, but your school or test center will confirm. Your college decides which tests you take.

What score do I need?

No one passes or fails ACCUPLACER. Each test is scored from 200 to 300, and each college sets the scores it uses to place students in courses, so check with your school. Our practice tests use 70% correct (14 of 20, or 18 of 25 for Writing) as a benchmark.

Can I use a calculator on the math tests?

Only on some questions. Those questions show a calculator icon and give you an on-screen calculator. You can't bring your own calculator unless it is an approved accommodation, so practice working without one.

How do I sign up, and can I retake it?

You take ACCUPLACER through the college or test center that asks for it. Fees, scheduling and retest rules are set by each school, so check with yours.

Is this the official test?

No. This is practice material to help you prepare. ACCUPLACER is made by College Board and given by colleges and test centers. This site is not affiliated with College Board, and our questions are not real test questions.
